Summary of project

On March 28, 2008, a tanker truck carrying 9,000 gallons of gasoline and 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel on Interstate-91 (1-91) north bound was forced to take evasive actions to avoid hitting other vehicles. In the process, the tanker truck jack-knifed. The tractor remained on 1-91 but the trailer hit a guard rail and rolled down a steep embankment. The trailer ended lip at the bottom of the highway embankment, east of Center Street and north of 1-91. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP), designated Incident Command, headed up emergency response activities. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) was also on-site supporting emergency response activities. A cut off trench was installed on August 29 and 30, 2008 to prevent GW contamination from migrating off-site.
