NOVEMBER 15, 2008: SULFURIC ACID SPILL, BOSTON, MA

TRIDENT provided neutralization activities using sodium bicarbonate. We removed a total of 112 compromised and damaged batteries containing sulfuric acid.

Each battery weighed 325 lbs which required the usage of a hydraulic hoist to assist with placing them on carts for transportation to the loading dock. The pathway from the battery room to the loading dock was 535 linear feet and 6 mil poly was placed on the pathway as a precaution for accidental spills during transportation.

The battery rack was then cleaned using the neutralization solution. The entire room was decontaminated using the neutralization solution. The raised flooring was then removed to expose further acid contamination on the concrete floor. This floor was neutralized and all decontamination materials and personnel protective equipment were containerized within poly 55 gallon drums and transported and disposed of as corrosive solid materials under hazardous waste manifest.
